Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager service keeps stopping

We are running version 11.0.5002.333 of the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager on a Windows 2003 server standard edition (service pack 2) OS.

The system worked fine for a long period, although it was doing very little (only three managed clients).  Earlier this year we started to use the system more heavily and added several more new clients (up to a total of just under 50).  Shortly after that we began to experience this problem, which is making it impossible to manage the system.

The problem seems to occur when running the Endpoint Protection Manager Console.  It will run for a short period, allowing the user to navigate to one or two screens, but then freezes, or exits back to the logon screen.  On checking the list of services, the Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager has usually stopped at this point.  On checking the Windows application event log, the error message for semsrv "The Java Virtual Machine has exited with a code of -1, the service is being stopped."

We have read various forum questions on this issue and have tried various things (including checking for any other processes listening on the relevant TCP ports, adjusting the security settings on the Symantec installation folder, and using the repair option within Add/Remove Programs) but the problem persists.

I would be grateful for any help as we are now stuck!
